At an impressive 3000m above sea level, Mount Mulanje is the highest in the South- Central Africa. On the southern side of the mountain lies the great rift valley with spectacular free standing eroded mountains known as inselbergs whose unique geographical features inspired and provided a backdrop to J.R.R. Tolkien’s, the British author of an epic high fantasy novel “The Lord of the Rings.” one of the bestselling novels when he visited Malawi in the 1930s.
