The main water transport on lake Malawi is the famous Ilala, a 620 tonne vessel that can carry up to 360 passengers and 100 tons of freight.
The ilala ferry transfers passengers up and down lake Malawi once a week from the south of Malawi, to the north of Malawi (Monkey Bay & Chilumba respectively).
It makes nine stops at lakeside villages and towns in between as well as Likoma island and Chizumulu island allowing the people to experience the scenery and beauty of Malawi.
The whole trip from one end of the line to the other, takes about three days.
