Malawi’s unit of currency is the kwacha (abbreviated to MK), and Most licensed tourism operators accept major foreign currencies. The following Credit / Debit cards are widely accepted in Malawi:

Banking

Most banks open at 08:00 hrs to 15:00 hrs. However, few banks extended their operating hours to 16:00 hrs. Note that there are 24-hour ATMs in Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mzuzu and that only local currency is dispensed.

Malawi uses the British three pin square plug and a 240 volt supply, so take adaptors and a transformer if necessary.

What to Wear

Beach resorts are very informal; however, it is important to remember that Malawians are generally conservative people, visitors should respect local customs and traditions when visiting villages and public places. Natural or dark colours should be worn in preference to light/bright colours for Safaris, business meetings are usually formal and those combining work with pleasure should keep this in mind.

Best time to visit

Malawi is always beautiful. The cooler months (May to August/September) are more comfortable for travelers from the northern hemisphere, but the lush, green summer. November to April is also a good time to visit. Remember to use insect repellents. May and June combine the best of both seasons – cooler, still green with great visibility – and are especially good for photography.

  • Don’t be afraid to use a map or ask for directions, so as not to get completely lost.
